Q and A

Question

What is diet advice if you are just diagnosed?

Why does everything have to go with luck?

Is it possible to be positive and then negative?

I have just found out that I’m HIV-positive and I have shamed my family. Please tell me about what to eat and what not to eat.

Answer

I am really sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis.

I hope your family will be fine with it after a while. Usually, it is difficult for the family members and relatives to accept that this is happening to you and often they refuse to admit that this is the reality.

Quite often the main reason for that is that they are more scared for you rather than themselves but sometimes this is just prejudice and may take time to educate them with accurate information.

You need to be prepared for some strange behaviour and reactions from time to time and also shame is not something that is linked to HIV. HIV is someting that can happen to anybody.

We all have sex, we all trust our partners, we all have protected sex, and yet…

HIV is just another medical condition. It can be treated and it can be treated successfully. There are no risks to other people from day-to-day contact.
As for diet, recommendations for HIV-positive people are generally the same as for HIV-negative people. Try to eat a balanced diet that is low in saturated fat, and includes fruit and vegetables, fish, lean meat.

If you are interested in more detailed information, many organisations have produced information about nutrition and diet. Try some of the links from the nutrition pages at www.thebody.com.

Take good care and I am hope things will get easier soon.

Depending on how advanced the condition is, modern medicine can do something about it. I would sugges you contact a specialist in the area as soon as possible.
