What is the cost of treatment in the UK?
11 July 2012. Related: Access to treatment, All topics.
I will be visiting the UK and I have not started on any kind of treatment. I would like to know from you how much on average should I expect to spend on medication per month.
Answer
Hi
Health care in the UK is provided by the National Health Service (NHS) which means that testing and treatment is free to residents or visitors entitled to care (ie EU citizens, most students, people who are working in the UK).
Some tests and treatments related to sexually transmitted infections (STI) are free to anyone at a sexual health clinics (also called GUM or STI clinics) and this includes visitors to the UK.
Although HIV treatment was not included in free treatment for visitors, this is due to be changed shortly. This may still need someone to be resident in the UK for 6 months but different clinics are likely to interpret access to treatment differently.
Private health care is also available, usually but the same doctors who run NHS clinics. Average treatment costs for private patients probably vary from £ 5-8,000 a year, depending on the drugs you use.
