Question
How soon can I eat after taking Odimune?
21 August 2012. Related: Adherence, All topics.
I hear you say its advisable to take odimune (efavrienz+ FTC+ tenofovir) at bed time and its only taken on empty stomach, how long exactly should i stay away from food before taking it? The reason i am asking this is I can not starve the whole day before taking the tablet.
Answer
Saying that Odimune needs to be taken on an ’empty stomach’ doesn’t mean you need to starve yourself. It is fine to eat something before or when you take this, but you have to be careful to make sure this is not a high fat meal.
A high fat meal will increase levels of efavirenz and so you may get more side effects (mood changes, anxiety, disorientation or interrupted sleep etc). Food low in fat or with just a little fat, will be fine.
More about this is explained in this question: What happens if don’t take Atripla on an empty stomach?
Odimune is a generic version of Atripla which includes the same meds but is just made by a different company.
I’ve just started on my arv treatment which consist of purbac, vitamins and odimune now I was told to take odimune at bedtime only. but I dont have a specific time for bed which means I take them anytime from 8pm like wise with my vitamins purbac I take those in the morning at any time.. Am I taking my treatment correctly?
Hi,
Thanks for your email. I’m sorry to hear about the difficulties you are having. Taking ARVs and TB meds together can be very difficult and it’s normal to experience side effects. It is very important though that you talk to your doctor about the weight loss and the other symptoms you are experiencing. S/he may be able to give you some treatment to help with this and may want to check whether there are any other infections that could be making this worse.
Good Day
I am currently on Tribuss and have lost alot of wieght. I am also on Tb tablets I started both these treatments at the same time. Problem is I am forever tired and do not gain weight at all. My whole body has black spots. I have been on this treatment for 5 months now and havent seen anychanges whats worse is that I have missed my periods for 2 months now. Can you please advice.
Hi Poppy,
Thanks for your email. Atroiza and Odimune are the same combination of ARVs- the different names are because they are made by different companies. You should not notice any difference in the way these work, and one will be as effective as the other.
I was takeing atroiza and now they give me odimune and Im breadfeed it is fine
Hi Letsatsi,
Can you tell me what treatment you were on before you started odimune? Muscle cramps are not a common side effect of odimune so this is something you should discuss with your doctor. Have you told your doctor about this?
I would like to know I have changed to odimune on 24/07/2013 since I started im struggling at night with my right leg its got cramps I cnt sleep. What can I do to prevent these pains since I cant cope at work
Hi Vuyokazi,
It is fine to change to take your pills at 8pm if this will be easier for you. If you are taking Odimune you should try to leave at least 2 hours between eating a high fat meal and taking your pills as this can make side effects more difficult.
Hi l’d lyk to know is it okay if l can change time of drinking my pills l usually drink them @10 at nyt so nw l want to drink them at 8 because sometyms l feel ten is too far n l want to sleep n if l sleep early l cant hear my alarm so l’l forget to take them…
Hi
Odimune and Atripla contain the same active drugs in the same doses. They should both be as effective and it sounds like you get a better deal from using Odimune.
