Q and A

Question

Will updates on cure research help my sadness?

I love this site. So many answers are found here. Thank you for helping so many people.

I am positive for two years. My CD4 is 600 and viral load is undetectable. My meds are doing the trick.

I am so sad all of the time and just stay hopeful all who are suffering will see a cure! Any updates on curing HIV infection?

Answer

Hi

Thanks for your question and your nice feedback.

Your question made me sad though! Why are you so unhappy?

Your treatment is working really well and you should be making plans to get the most from life now, rather than waiting for a cure to come.

Although the research is exciting, a cure, if it can be discovered, is likely to be at least ten years away.

Even the current meds improve the chance of most of us living into out 50s, 60s and later. If a cure comes it will of course be great, but try to get as much out of life now in case this doesn’t happen.

You have only been positive for a couple of years, and it takes time to come to terms with HIV. I am sure you are much stronger now than when you were first diagnosed, but if you are still finding it difficult, try and find someone you can talk to about this.

Do you know other HIV positive people? There are also some good online discussion groups including at poz.com.
