Question
Can I receive my treatment in Gran Canaria?
23 February 2009. Related: Access to treatment, All topics.
Hi,
I have been on meds for 1 year now, CD4 300 and VL less than 50. My health in general is very good. I am a patient of Chelsea and Westminster but am soon moving to Gran Canaria. My question is how does one find a clinician in a place like Gran Canaria? Or is it possible to continue receiving treatment in the UK?
Thanks for your help!
Answer
As a citizen of an EU country, you are entitled to treatment anywhere in the EU. This includes Gran Canaria. Whether they have a treatment centre there, however, I do not know. The easiest way is to contact directly the local hospital there and they will inform you where is the nearest treatment centre.
You can also ask Spanish colleagues of ours by asking your question online at the following link: http://gtt-vih.org/consultanos/consultas_sobre_tratamientos They will be able to provide you with the exact information of how to register, where, etc.
As for having your treatment in the UK, you can do that too, as long as you are able to attend the scheduled hospital visits and take your ARVs. If this is not financially burdensome for you, then great.
