Q and A

Question

Can I travel to Dubai and the Oman if I am positive and on medication?

Hello – can I travel to Dubai and the Oman if I am positive and on medication?

I have read that they will not allow you to enter the country if medication is found on you. Is this true?

I am undetectable for over a year now with CD4 of 250 (slowly rising).

Do I need any confirmation letter from my doctor? If so, what should it say? And should I carry this on me all the time?

What about the rest of the middle east?
Many thanks

Answer

Hello,

Regulations relating to traveling with HIV can be complicated. In many countries there are different regulations depending on the type of stay-whether it’s a tourist visit or to work. i-Base are not experts in this area, and these regulations can change over time.

Details of entry restrictions for different countries can be found on the HIV travel website.

In the past many HIV positive people have traveled to countries which are restricted. How this has been done is mentioned at this previous question.

    Hi Rachel,

As Rebecca says above, travel to the UAE can be complicated for people who are HIV positive.

It can depend on whether you’re travelling through, on a tourist visit, or if you want to work there.

Please see this link to HIV travel.

    Hi Tom,

If they search your luggage and find ARVs, they may not let you into the country. However, if you need more clarity you’ll need to contact someone from your nearest UAE embassy.

    Hi Waqar,

I’m sorry to hear this story. It’s not the kind of information that i-Base can help with. But it does sound as though a quick check on your name will show that you’ve been deported from Dubai.

Is there someone in your country that can advise you on this in confidence?

    Hi Tiny,

If you’re in transit, then it’s not an issue going through UAE. It’s always best to travel with your meds in your hanf luggage just in case something happens to your checked luggage.
