Q and A

Question

Can I travel to Gabon?

I’m thinking of going on a trip to Gabon this time next year. This will be part safari.

I know the problems of yellow fever vaccine (lack of efficacy, possibility of infection). I can not see any problem with taking doxycycline as an anti-malarial (no interactions with darunavir/r + Truvada), and know that there is no vaccine for dengue fever. Gabon doesn’t seem to have any entry restrictions for HIV+ people.

My current CD4 is 228 and rising and VL undetectable. Am I mad to even consider such a trip?

Answer

It sounds like you’ve done all the right research when thinking about this trip. It’s a good idea to discuss this with your doctor but being HIV positive shouldn’t stop you doing the things you would normally do. HIV positive people travel and work all over the world.

I hope you have a great trip (and successful safari!).
