Q and A

Question

Do I need a letter to travel with ARVs?

I am travelling to France at the end of the month – will I need a letter from the hospital for when I travel with my meds in case there are any problems at airport security/immigration?

Answer

There are no travel restrictions for HIV positive people traveling to France. Generally, customs regulations require people entering with prescription medication like antiretroviral drugs to carry a doctor’s certificate, stating that the drugs are required to treat a personal condition. This requirement applies to all prescription drugs, not just HIV treatment.

Medication should always be carried in hand luggage, as checked luggage may be delayed or get lost. If you are carrying-on liquid medication exceeding 3 ounces / 100 ml, you must declare it at the checkpoint for inspection.

Hi Roman, please look up Egypt in this excellent website:
    http://www.hivtravel.org

Most countries do not have a problem with medicines if you are visiting for only a short time, for example for a holiday.

i-Base specialises in treatment Qs though so please check the website above.

    Hello
Is it possible to travel to Egypt with pills? Do custom officers check bags meticulously?

Hi Tonz, it would be much better if you either bring your meds with you when you travel or arrange to access meds here in the UK. Although posting personal meds should be okay, this can only cover a three-month supply at a time. It will need to follow whatever requirements are needed for documentation.

HIV testing. monitoring and treatment are free for anyone living in the UK and so it would be easier to get your meds here

Hi Moreen, it would be advised to carry a prescription/doctors note with you to show that your medication is for personal use. If this is not possible, Italy do not have any travel restrictions for people living with HIV. Carrying your ARVs would not cause a problem.

Hi Jem, congratulations on being offered an Erasmus grant. i-base is a UK based charity and am not aware of access in Spain. This previous questions contains a link for a Spanish based charity similar to i-base that you can contact: https://i-base.info/qa/19360. Good luck with your studies.

I’ve been given an Erasmus grant to study in Spain for a semestre. As a non-EU citizen can i get assistance in terms of access to my HIV medication in Spain since i have no way of paying for it while i’m there? Or should i just give up on this once in a lifetime opportunity?
