Q and A

Question

Is it OK to use muscle gain powder?

I have been taking Atripla since September and wanted to know if I could take muscle and weight gain powder shakes as I go to the gym and would like to increase my muscle tone. Is it safe to use while taking my medicines?

Answer

Generally, yes. Protein powders are fine to use, but follow the instructions that are included on the pack (ie do not rely on them as a food substitute).

The main caution with body-building supplements is with creatine which will affect the kidney monitoring test results and steroids which are not recommended.

Always let your doctor and pharmacist know of any supplements that you want to use.

    Hi Petrus,

It’s important to discuss this with your doctor. That’s because other drugs or treatment can interact with your ARVs.

Please see this link to HIV drug interactions.

    Hi Miranda,

Lifegain supplement and alcohol are not likely to interact with your HIV meds. But always let your doctor and pharmacist know of any supplements that you want to use.

Are you taking another drug with efavirenz and Kavimun? Standard treatment for HIV is usually 3 or more drugs.
