Q and A

Question

Does HIV mean I’m likely to get cancer?

What is the likelihood of an HIV positive individual with a CD4 of 600 and undetectable who doesn’t drink or smoke developing cancer in their life?

I have no family history of cancer…..I heard cancer is a big killer amongst HIV positive people….it makes me so scared…..

Answer

Hello,

Thanks for your email. I’m sorry to hear how worried you are about your long-term health. The fact that you CD4 count and viral load are both so good is very positive and means that you are likely to be at very little risk of HIV related complications in the short or medium term future.

Rather than going into detail about your question around the risk of long-term health and HIV I suggest reading this previous question answered by one of my colleagues. It is in response to a very similar question. If you have any questions after reading this please do let me know!
