Q and A

Question

Is Odimune safe in pregnancy?

I am an HIV positive woman and I am pregnant.

I have just received Odimune but I have a few concerns.

The leaflet which accompanies the batch states that Odimune is not recommended for pregnant women because safety and efficacy has not been established.

Is Odimune safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Answer

Hello,

Thanks for your email. We have a lot of questions from women taking this combination in pregnancy.

Odimune is a generic version of Atripla. This link is to a previous question about use in pregnancy. Atripla contains the same drugs as Odimune, it’s just a different name because it’s made by a different company.

If you have any questions after reading this please let me know and I will be more than happy to help!

    Hi Magret,
Yes, many women from around the world have taken Odimune when pregnant. Odimune contains the same drugs as Atripla, and you can read more info about it on this similar Q&A.

    Hi Snenhlanhla,

If your face is swollen this is something that you should discuss with a doctor. It’s unlikely to be HIV related, though it might.

    Hi Vovo,

Congratulations on having a baby! And yes, HIV meds are safe for your baby. Thousands of women all over the world have taken these drugs without any complications. The result is many healthy HIV negative babies. You can find out more in the i-Base guide to pregnancy.

    Hi Mavis,

Zinplex is used to treat skin conditions, therefore unless you have a skin condition I don’t know why you would be prescribed this. It isn’t for the HIV.
