Question
What is the news about a vaccine?
9 August 2009. Related: Access to treatment, All topics, Cure.
Do you think treatment breaks (drug-holidays) might make a come back?
I read some time ago about a new vaccine that’s been developed (may be by Binor Immune), which will boost the immune system; thereby allowing patients take a break from ARVs.
Do you have any information about this? Has it been approved, will it be widely available?
Answer
Thank you for your question to i-Base.
Perhaps you are referring to the University of Western Ontario vaccine (correct me if I am wrong) that has been announced to be quite promising recently. There is more information about it here.
As the scientists have explained, it may take some time before something is approved and available. I am sure, however, that as soon as a vaccine is approved in Europe (there is no application yet), everybody in the EU will have access to it ASAP. The question of price will also be important in order to make sure it is used in all countries that need it.
This looks also quite promising and as one of the scientists said (cited in the article) can make a huge difference. My impression from the general discourse when it comes to vaccines, however, is that we are still a long way from having something that will be successful. Let us hope though.
