Q and A

Question

How long can I live on Atroiza?

I’m a girl aged 20 and I’m HIV positive. My CD4 is 174 and I’m taking atroiza.

I want to know how long can I live?

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Having HIV can sometimes be difficult. But modern treatment is very effective. It means that you can have a near-normal life expectancy and a good quality of life.

Nobody can predict how long anyone will live. This depends on things you can change (smoking, exercise, medication) and thing you can’t (genetics and bad luck).

Do you have any support to deal with being HIV positive? If you are in South Africa you could contact the Treatment Action Campaign for information about treatment and support in your area.

The i-Base Introduction to combination therapy guide also has general information about treatment.

Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

Please me know if you have any questions or I can help further.

    Hi Mwana

Please talk to your doctor about the reasons for the TB meds. It might be that they are worried that you have TB that needs treating. Or it might be that the risk of TB is thought to be high.

I am not a doctor but there are likely to be good reasons why the docotr recommended this.

HIV is a difficult virus to catch sexually. Even if your partner is HIV positive and you did not use a condom, the risk is usually less than 1 in 100 (less than 1%). However, it only takes one exposure to catch HIV. This means that luck and other factors are involved.

If you started taking Atoiza very soon after exposure then this can help stop you being infected. But starting treatment later than 72 hours after exposure is likely to be much less effective. You can ask your clinic for another HIV test after 4 weeks.

Congratulations that you’re thinking about having another child. Yes if you want to, you can have another HIV negative baby. Taking your meds and keeping your viral load below 50 will help you do this. Talk to your doctor about keeping you and your new baby healthy.

I found out I was HIV positive when I had my last baby. But she is HIV negative. Ever since I’ve been living with the pill. I would like to know if I can have another baby if i want to.

    Hi Mbekiseni

How long will you be taking the TB meds for?

It sound like this is to protect you from TB – and this is very common and effective.

Please ask your doctor or nurse to explain your treatment.

Without details of other tests it is diffuclt to provide any more information.
