Q and A

Question

How long can I live on Atroiza?

I’m a girl aged 20 and I’m HIV positive. My CD4 is 174 and I’m taking atroiza.

I want to know how long can I live?

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Having HIV can sometimes be difficult. But modern treatment is very effective. It means that you can have a near-normal life expectancy and a good quality of life.

Nobody can predict how long anyone will live. This depends on things you can change (smoking, exercise, medication) and thing you can’t (genetics and bad luck).

Do you have any support to deal with being HIV positive? If you are in South Africa you could contact the Treatment Action Campaign for information about treatment and support in your area.

The i-Base Introduction to combination therapy guide also has general information about treatment.

Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

Please me know if you have any questions or I can help further.

Hi Nomthi, your boyfriend might be HIV negative, it is best to focus on your health rather than anyone else’s.

Hi Norah, please contact the doctor or clinic as soon as you can. If the doctor thins this is serious, your mother might need a different drug. In a small percnetage of people rahs can be very serious, so please check this with the doctor who can see this.

Hi Maureen, when you are not on treatment, it is common for the CD4 count to fluctuate. This means that even though the number is a bit higher, the last CD4 results were not really different to the one before. It is good that you are now starting treatment. This ifs both for your own health because the viral load is higher and to protect your baby if you become pregnant. More information about Atroiza (a generic version of Atripla) is here:

Hi my previous cd4 count was 633 with viral load of 12000 in 2014 and this month when I visited my docter my cd4 count was 771 with viral load of 82000. Is this normal I’m surprised as how can the viral load together with cd4 count all go up?
I’m not on any treatment and just found out I’m pregnant….. The Dr prescribed Atroiza for me
    Pls advise

Hi Maureen, thanks for sharing your experience. Counselling might help you resolve some of these difficult issues – either for yourself or with your husband. If your husband won;t discuss any of this, then the counselling might give you ways to understand reasons behind this and to also see new options for the future. Some people find it very difficult to talk. It sounds like you have come to terms with many issues as you have been living with HIV for six years now. You have the rest of your life ahead of you soe finding a way to be happy is important

Hi I’m HIV positive since 2010. My husband hid this from me and whenever I talk about our status he keeps quiet and never said anything at all. His ex-girlfriend died of Aids and he doesn’t wanna discuss any of this. I’m stressed and don’t know what to do. I need his support since he’s the one who put me into this awkward life. Pls help

    Hi Gcina

M171 means but this website suggests it might be Tribuss.
    http://www.events.za.bz/news-archive.aspx?ID=697

Tribuss is a generic version of Atripla. It contains efavirenz, tenofovir-DF and emtricitabine. The symptoms you are describing could be side effects of efvirenz. But please talk to you doctor.

Please also look at the medication box or jar and see what the names or the active drugs are.
