Q and A

Question

How long can I live on Atroiza?

I’m a girl aged 20 and I’m HIV positive. My CD4 is 174 and I’m taking atroiza.

I want to know how long can I live?

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Having HIV can sometimes be difficult. But modern treatment is very effective. It means that you can have a near-normal life expectancy and a good quality of life.

Nobody can predict how long anyone will live. This depends on things you can change (smoking, exercise, medication) and thing you can’t (genetics and bad luck).

Do you have any support to deal with being HIV positive? If you are in South Africa you could contact the Treatment Action Campaign for information about treatment and support in your area.

The i-Base Introduction to combination therapy guide also has general information about treatment.

Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

Please me know if you have any questions or I can help further.

    Hi Sbonela,

Can you talk to the doctor about changing your PEP drugs, especially if they are Atroiza. There are other drugs that would work fine as PEP that could be better for you.

The main drug in Atroiza is efavirenz and this has been linked to mood changes and bad sleep. Can you talk to the doctor about switching to different PEP?

    Hi M T,

Sorry, you don’t sound well. But what does the doctor say about your treatment?

Odimune is for treating HIV. Nucotrim and isoniazid are antibiotics and are often used to treat or stop risk of other infections, especially if CD4 count is low. How long have you been on treatment?

Yes, you can take Odimune at 10:30 pm. It’s recommeded to take it on an empty stomach before bedtime. Please see this link.

It’s important not to miss taking the pills often. But here’s a guide to help remember to take your pills the right way.

Please talk to your doctor about all the other symptoms, including blurry vision.

    Hi,
It’s my first time here. And sorry for a long story. My viral load is 1300 and was given odimune, nucotrim during Winthrop isoniazid. My question is that, is it ok to take odimune @10:30 at night and recently I missed 1 night and the following night I was late due to sudden sleep and took it at 01:am ! The following morning I continued my day time treatment as usual ? I must say that the only problem I have is tiredness. But I have since had a serious constipation which leads me in taking a laxative and if I don’t, it tears my anus (very painful) even before I started treatment. And another thing is I only feel ok whenever I had taken a laxative after a very bitter, yellow staff came out (gall) which lasts for a few days then my vision will be blurry (and I know it’s time for a laxative). Please help. I’m afraid I’ll flush my treatment and delay my weight regain !!

    Hi Luffy,

This will depend where you want to go. Which country did you have in mind?

I want to leave the country but I fear not being able to get treatment in other countries. Can I still go? If I can, where can I get treatment?

    Hi Mbali,

It’s good to hear that you’re now on HIV treatment (ART) and that you are not sick and you don’t have TB.

There can be many reasons why HIV positive people lose weight. These can be factors such as not being on ART, or even stress. Getting your weight back to normal can be helped by having a healthy balanced diet. Please see this guide to a balanced diet and your health.

Hi ‘I ‘m hiv positive, I only knew when I get birth to my first child who is now 16yrs old,, and I was not taking any treatment at that time up until this year in December because I was loosing weight with no sick and no Tb so suprisingly , i was very hyper active instead,, so I went to the clinic and they discovered that my CD4 is in 19 ,, so I started my treatment immediately,, right now I’m feeling confident with my body even though I’m slim ,, what I need to know,, would I go back to my normal wait that was 36 as I’m in 30 , and how long it will take
