Q and A

Question

How long can I live on Atroiza?

I’m a girl aged 20 and I’m HIV positive. My CD4 is 174 and I’m taking atroiza.

I want to know how long can I live?

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Having HIV can sometimes be difficult. But modern treatment is very effective. It means that you can have a near-normal life expectancy and a good quality of life.

Nobody can predict how long anyone will live. This depends on things you can change (smoking, exercise, medication) and thing you can’t (genetics and bad luck).

Do you have any support to deal with being HIV positive? If you are in South Africa you could contact the Treatment Action Campaign for information about treatment and support in your area.

The i-Base Introduction to combination therapy guide also has general information about treatment.

Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

Please me know if you have any questions or I can help further.

    Hi Shalati,

The feelings that you’re having are possibly due to the medication that you’ve just started. These usually go within a few weeks of starting meds. If you’ve been on the meds for more than a few week then you may want to talk to your doctor about this. Info on how to take Atrozia can be found here: http://i-base.info/guides/1561

If your partner is aware of your status and is refusing to use condoms then the risk is his and not yours. He has a responsibility to look after his own sexual health.

    Hi Valencia,

A CD4 count of 720 is high. This is a positive thing as it means that your immune system is strong. For it to remain high, you’ll need to be on ARVs. Please see here: http://i-base.info/guides/starting

    Hi Enonamous,
It is very common for someone to still be negative even if they have not been using condoms with someone who is HIV positive. HIV is quite a difficult virus to catch, so your negative result is also related to good luck. Please see this similar question and follow the links to the PARTNER study.
