Q and A

Question

How long can I live on Atroiza?

I’m a girl aged 20 and I’m HIV positive. My CD4 is 174 and I’m taking atroiza.

I want to know how long can I live?

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Having HIV can sometimes be difficult. But modern treatment is very effective. It means that you can have a near-normal life expectancy and a good quality of life.

Nobody can predict how long anyone will live. This depends on things you can change (smoking, exercise, medication) and thing you can’t (genetics and bad luck).

Do you have any support to deal with being HIV positive? If you are in South Africa you could contact the Treatment Action Campaign for information about treatment and support in your area.

The i-Base Introduction to combination therapy guide also has general information about treatment.

Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

Please me know if you have any questions or I can help further.

    Hi Themby,

If your boyfriend is feeling like this he should talk to his doctor about this. Having issues with urinating aren’t a side effects of meds.

    Hi Mmule,
Sorry but these results are not clear. It’s great that your CD4 count has increased. But viral load is usually given as a figure, not a percentage. Can you check again with the doctor please?

Hai my name is Mmule I made the test in 2015 they come positive with cd4 count of 464 an viral load of 17. Then my doctor adviced me to take ARVs an I refused. This year I went to test again an the Dr didn’t told me whether am positive or negative he only tell me that he is surprised because I didn’t took any medication my cd4 count is 850 an viral load is 76%. I don’t know what to think now. Pls help

    Hi Azee,

Did you start HIV treatment when you tested positive? Starting treatment (ART) can reduce viral load dramatically over the first months, so this could be the reason you are now undetectable.

However, IRIS is inflammation caused by your immune system suddenly getting stronger. And this happens when you start ART. But IRIS is likely if you start ART at very low CD4 counts, such as 50 cells/mm3. If your CD4 count is higher there can be less risk of IRIS when you start treatment. There’s more about IRIS here.

I am anomous I tested positive in October than when I took blood test in April my results came back saying the virus is undectable , from a load of 540000. Does that increase chances of me having IRIS

    Hi Loyiso,

If you aren’t having any side effects, this is great news. Do you have an issue with your weight?
