Q and A

Question

How long can I live on Atroiza?

I’m a girl aged 20 and I’m HIV positive. My CD4 is 174 and I’m taking atroiza.

I want to know how long can I live?

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Having HIV can sometimes be difficult. But modern treatment is very effective. It means that you can have a near-normal life expectancy and a good quality of life.

Nobody can predict how long anyone will live. This depends on things you can change (smoking, exercise, medication) and thing you can’t (genetics and bad luck).

Do you have any support to deal with being HIV positive? If you are in South Africa you could contact the Treatment Action Campaign for information about treatment and support in your area.

The i-Base Introduction to combination therapy guide also has general information about treatment.

Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

Please me know if you have any questions or I can help further.

    Hi Tumi,
It’s a good idea to have another test to confirm this. However, if they tested at the clinic where you get your ARVs they can test for viral load and for antibodies. If your viral load is undetectable that is great, and the aim of ARV treatment. But it doesn’t mean you are HIV negative. You can ask the clinic to explain your results to you.

    Hi Johannah,

Unless you’re positive, which a negative non-reactive result would imply that you aren’t, then you don’t need to use ARVS. Can you ask the doctor why you were given medication?

Hi Sipho, Yes, this is PEP. But it’s important that you start PEP soon, usually within 24 hours but some say within 72 hours. You can go to the clinic and ask for PEP if you think you have been exposed to HIV. You can read more about PEP here.

Hi Jeremie, Congratulations on having a baby! This question has already been answered here. As Robin explains HIV can be quite difficult to catch. But you can ask the clinic to help look after your girlfriend until the baby is born. Here is the guide to HIV pregnancy and women’s health.

    Hi Nonhlanhla,

Atrozia is a very effective ARV. Once someone starts it their CD4 count will begin to rise. This is the same for all ARVs. If you’re new to meds you might find the following helpful:
