Q and A

Question

How long can I live on Atroiza?

I’m a girl aged 20 and I’m HIV positive. My CD4 is 174 and I’m taking atroiza.

I want to know how long can I live?

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Having HIV can sometimes be difficult. But modern treatment is very effective. It means that you can have a near-normal life expectancy and a good quality of life.

Nobody can predict how long anyone will live. This depends on things you can change (smoking, exercise, medication) and thing you can’t (genetics and bad luck).

Do you have any support to deal with being HIV positive? If you are in South Africa you could contact the Treatment Action Campaign for information about treatment and support in your area.

The i-Base Introduction to combination therapy guide also has general information about treatment.

Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

Please me know if you have any questions or I can help further.

Can my cd4 increase as I use atroiza they said it’s 319?

Hi Thulisile, please contact the organisation I recommended in New Mexico in case they can help. How low was your CD4 count before you started treatment? The lower it was below 300, the more serious a break in treatment could be. If your CD4 count never went below 300 there are fewer risks from taking a short break if you can’t get access to medicines.

I’m going home in February and I’m left with 4 tablets.

Hi Thulisile, how long are you in New Mexico for? If this is a short trip and your meds have finished, you can either try to get replacement meds in New Mexico or wait until you get back to SA. Although it is not ideal, if you only have a few days without meds it might be easier to arrange this as soon as you get back to SA. If it is any longer, you could try contacting the New Mexico AIDS Services in case they can help with a small supply until you get home.

    Hi Pritty,

Atrozia is usually free, however this depends where you live. Do you live in a country where ARVs aren’t free?

    Hi Nhlemeza,

This will vary from person to person, therefore you’ll need to talk to your doctor about this.

    Hi Penelope,

Its very common to feel ‘high’ or drunk when you first start Atrozia. This is something that should usually go within a few weeks. If its already better, then this is great.
