Q and A

Question

How long can I live on Atroiza?

I’m a girl aged 20 and I’m HIV positive. My CD4 is 174 and I’m taking atroiza.

I want to know how long can I live?

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Having HIV can sometimes be difficult. But modern treatment is very effective. It means that you can have a near-normal life expectancy and a good quality of life.

Nobody can predict how long anyone will live. This depends on things you can change (smoking, exercise, medication) and thing you can’t (genetics and bad luck).

Do you have any support to deal with being HIV positive? If you are in South Africa you could contact the Treatment Action Campaign for information about treatment and support in your area.

The i-Base Introduction to combination therapy guide also has general information about treatment.

Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

Please me know if you have any questions or I can help further.

I’m positive and taking Atroiza, is it a start of medication or is this the same as ARV?

    Hi Sonto,

Until your partners viral load becomes undetectable you will need to use condoms. You could also use PrEP.

I am HIV negative and my partner is positive and on treatment, its been 20 days now. We use protection but condoms are not reliable at times because they rip. How can we have safe sex, how do I protect myself from getting infected? or what are the chances of me getting infected?

    Please help

    Hi Thulani,

If you’ve been having sex without a condom and with someone who is positive and not on treatment, then yes you need to test.

My gal has started using the pills and I don’t know my status. She said I should get tested. We’ve been having unprotected sex and she’s pregnant.

    Hi Brian,

Its common to have these types of side effects when you first start Atrozia. They should however go within a few weeks.

Ideally Atrozia should be taken just before you go to bed. For more info, please see here:

I am 23,I’m taking Atroiza during the night..but after taking it around 7pm, I can’t talk with my family because I will start to be like someone who is drunk/high. Its now been 3 days.

    Hi Mana,

Yes its possible to buy ARVs in South Africa. You will however need to have a prescription from your doctor. You should also need to register with another clinic.
