Q and A

Question

How long can I live on Atroiza?

I’m a girl aged 20 and I’m HIV positive. My CD4 is 174 and I’m taking atroiza.

I want to know how long can I live?

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Having HIV can sometimes be difficult. But modern treatment is very effective. It means that you can have a near-normal life expectancy and a good quality of life.

Nobody can predict how long anyone will live. This depends on things you can change (smoking, exercise, medication) and thing you can’t (genetics and bad luck).

Do you have any support to deal with being HIV positive? If you are in South Africa you could contact the Treatment Action Campaign for information about treatment and support in your area.

The i-Base Introduction to combination therapy guide also has general information about treatment.

Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

Please me know if you have any questions or I can help further.

    Hi Thandeka,

Being diagnosed with HIV can be hard, is there someone who you can talk to?

Your CD4 count is very low, and though you may be scared about starting meds it’s very important that you start. You should also follow the advice that’s in this link: http://i-base.info/qa/4643

Given your CD4, ideally you should be under specialist care, if you were in the UK, this would be the case.

With regards to telling people about your status, specifically your boyfriend, if you’ve been having sex without a condom he’s going to need to test. This is because there is a possibility that he could also be positive. As to how you tell him, I really can’t comment.

    Hi Mary,

Weight gain can be due to numerous reasons, one of which is ARVs. Though this is less common with modern medication. Diet and exercise are important, as too is general lifestyle. If weight gain is an issue your doctor may be able to give you some advice.

    Hi Doctor,

Unless a cure is found, once a person is positive they will always be positive. If your girlfriend is on medication and her viral load is undetectable this will explain why you are negative. Please see here: http://i-base.info/u-equals-u/

    Hi Keitumetse,

Tribuss and Atrozia are both generic versions of an ARV called Atripla. Please see here: http://i-base.info/guides/1561 What this means is that they contain the same compounds. It’s very common to switch between the generic versions.

It’s not common to have side effects when switching, however this can at times happen. If it’s an issue after a week or so, please talk to your doctor.

    Hi Xoliswa,

It is very common for someone to still be negative even if they have not been using condoms with someone who is HIV positive. HIV is quite a difficult virus to catch, so your partner’s negative result is also related to good luck.

Please read more on this Q&A.

But how are you doing? Have you started HIV meds yet? Please let us know.
