Q and A

Question

How long can I live on Atroiza?

I’m a girl aged 20 and I’m HIV positive. My CD4 is 174 and I’m taking atroiza.

I want to know how long can I live?

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Having HIV can sometimes be difficult. But modern treatment is very effective. It means that you can have a near-normal life expectancy and a good quality of life.

Nobody can predict how long anyone will live. This depends on things you can change (smoking, exercise, medication) and thing you can’t (genetics and bad luck).

Do you have any support to deal with being HIV positive? If you are in South Africa you could contact the Treatment Action Campaign for information about treatment and support in your area.

The i-Base Introduction to combination therapy guide also has general information about treatment.

Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

Please me know if you have any questions or I can help further.

    Hi Jane,

Many thanks for your comments. It’s great that your ARVs look like they’re working well and you are still going strong! But you could talk to your doctor about your thin legs and big shoulder.

    Thanks again and best wishes,
    Roy

I am 53 I have take ARVs for 15yrs am going strong, my CD4 is 771, the problem I have is my body my legs are thin no buttox and big shoulder, I dont know what to do with that.

You are still young the only thing is that you have to take your ARVs correctly in time, condomise, you can leave for many years as long as you look after your self, and you to can do it.

    Hi Seun,

If you lived in the UK (I’m assuming you don’t) you wouldn’t be given Atrozia as PEP. You’d be given a different combination of ARVs. Therefore I can’t say how long you should remain on the Atrozia for, please talk to the doctor who prescribed the Atrozia.

    Hi Evarisgo,

How long have you been on medication for? If it’s over three months, then ideally your viral load should be undetectable. If it’s undetectable then there’s no risk your wife contracting HIV from you. Please see here: http://i-base.info/u-equals-u/ What this means is that you can have sex without a condom. If you’re new to treatment, then the best thing to do is to wait until your HIV is under control.

    Hi Emmanuel,

Please consult your doctor about the rash, this could be a side effect of the Atrozia. Just to note, Atrozia isn’t used to treat PEP, PEP is made up of other drugs.

    Hi Elijah,

What other ARVs were you taking with efavirenz? The main drug in Atroiza is efavirenz. So it could be that you haven’t changed HIV meds.

However, if you have sores on your body, it’s important to see that doctor so they can be looked at.
