Q and A

Question

How long can I live on Atroiza?

I’m a girl aged 20 and I’m HIV positive. My CD4 is 174 and I’m taking atroiza.

I want to know how long can I live?

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Having HIV can sometimes be difficult. But modern treatment is very effective. It means that you can have a near-normal life expectancy and a good quality of life.

Nobody can predict how long anyone will live. This depends on things you can change (smoking, exercise, medication) and thing you can’t (genetics and bad luck).

Do you have any support to deal with being HIV positive? If you are in South Africa you could contact the Treatment Action Campaign for information about treatment and support in your area.

The i-Base Introduction to combination therapy guide also has general information about treatment.

Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

Please me know if you have any questions or I can help further.

    Hi Dineo,

You’ve posted this comment on a Q&A about Atroiza. Is that the HIV treatment you’re taking? Efavirenz is one of the drugs in this pill and feeling dizzy is a reported side effect of it.

Please talk to your doctor about switching to other meds that can be easier for you to take.

But how is the treatment going? If you have access to your CD4 count and viral load results, please let us know what they are.

    Hi Zama,

If you’re living with HIV, then ARVs need to be taken daily.

    Hi Tshegofatso,

Yes, is the short answer, you can refuse to change meds. But it’s important to change your HIV meds if they are not working well and your viral load rebounds.

Please let us know what meds you’re on. And what was the reason your clinic said to change them. If you have access to your viral load results and CD4 count, please let us know those too.

    Hi Herman,

Only you can decide if you want to let your girlfriend know that you know her about her status, as this is a personal issue between you as a couple. However, what you could do is start talking about HIV to her and causally say that you wouldn’t have an issue with being in a relationship with someone who is positive, that could help.

    Hi Thembie,

Medication for children is age specific, if you have a child who is HIV positive, their pediatrician is the person to talk to.

At what age may the child use the Atrozia?
