Q and A

Question

How long can I live on Atroiza?

I’m a girl aged 20 and I’m HIV positive. My CD4 is 174 and I’m taking atroiza.

I want to know how long can I live?

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Having HIV can sometimes be difficult. But modern treatment is very effective. It means that you can have a near-normal life expectancy and a good quality of life.

Nobody can predict how long anyone will live. This depends on things you can change (smoking, exercise, medication) and thing you can’t (genetics and bad luck).

Do you have any support to deal with being HIV positive? If you are in South Africa you could contact the Treatment Action Campaign for information about treatment and support in your area.

The i-Base Introduction to combination therapy guide also has general information about treatment.

Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

Please me know if you have any questions or I can help further.

    Hi Phakamile,

Being confrontational won’t help. If you think your wife might be positive, you’ll need to find a way to discuss this with her in a respectful way. Firstly you need to think about why she may have chosen not to tell you about her status (that is if she’s positive). For many people they worry about stigma and rejection.

If your wife is positive you’ll need to ask her how long she’s been on medication for. If she’s been on medication throughout the course of your relationship there won’t be any risk to you, that is as long as her HIV was/is under control.

When a person is on ARVs and their viral load is undetectable they can’t transmit HIV to sexual partners, please see here: https://i-base.info/u-equals-u/

If you’re not ready to talk to your wife, for piece of mind you should have a HIV test.

    Hi Trizah,

ARVs don’t usually make a person lose weight, if anything you gain weight. As you’re pregnant it’s important that you talk to your doctor about the weight loss as it could be pregnancy related.

    Hi lola,

Atrozia is usually taken on its own as it’s a full combination ARV, please see here:https://i-base.info/guides/1561 What this means is that you shouldn’t need to take any other ARVs, other than this. Did your doctor say why you need to take both the Aluvia as well as the Atrozia?

Hi can I take Atrioza and Aluvia at once?.I take 2 tablets of Aluvia during the day and another 2 at night. Is Atrioza for the night?

    Hi Tina,

The medication that you’ve been given is known to cause people to feel sick and dizzy, if you’re having issues with it please talk to your doctor. The test that your boyfriend did, as this was a home testing kit, he’ll need to do another test. Has he been able to have a test done in a clinic or in a hospital?
