Q and A

Question

How long can I live on Atroiza?

I’m a girl aged 20 and I’m HIV positive. My CD4 is 174 and I’m taking atroiza.

I want to know how long can I live?

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Having HIV can sometimes be difficult. But modern treatment is very effective. It means that you can have a near-normal life expectancy and a good quality of life.

Nobody can predict how long anyone will live. This depends on things you can change (smoking, exercise, medication) and thing you can’t (genetics and bad luck).

Do you have any support to deal with being HIV positive? If you are in South Africa you could contact the Treatment Action Campaign for information about treatment and support in your area.

The i-Base Introduction to combination therapy guide also has general information about treatment.

Atroiza is a generic version of Atripla.

Please me know if you have any questions or I can help further.

Alcohol does not affect the way your HIV meds work. In general this is OK.

Hi i’m on treatment for HIV, I like to know how dangerous it is to drink alcohol while i’m on treatment, does that mean I must completely stop drinking?

    Hi Patricia

It sounds like you need to talk to a doctor or other health worker to explain your new treatment.

You don’t say anything about HIV – are you HIV positive?

Isoniazid as a single medicine may have been prescribed to protect you against TB – so you may not have an active infection.

Please talk to your doctor about this.

    Hi,

This is not common. Usually you will experience side effects when you first start treatment. They will then either stop or just continue. They do not usually start 4 months afterwards. You should talk to your doctor or clinic. They can help you work out what is causing you symptoms.

Hi I’m pregnant, I just found out last month about my HIV status. I am not stressed becuase I get all the support from my HIV positive boyfriend. I started my Atroiza on the 2nd March after my results. I saw things that nobody else saw, bad dreams, they druged me a lot and increased my body temperature a lot. But what I can say is that all these side effects vary from person to person and do not last for a long time… it happens for about a week or two. Thanks

    Hi,

It is great you want to have a baby. Many women who have HIV now have negative babies.

You can find lots of information about getting pregnant and HIV and pregnancy here:
