Q and A

Question

What time should I take my ARVs?

I recently discoverd that I’m HIV and pregnant and my CD4 is above 500. I just want to know what is the right time to drink medication? Because I eat at 18h30 and drink the tablets at 19h00 is it safe?

Answer

Hi,

I’m sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis but congratulations on your pregnancy!

The right time to take your medication will depend on which drugs you are taking. Can you tell me the names of the tablets you are taking?

Information about how to take different ARVs can be found on our meds page.

Hi Ayanda, it is generally up to you when you take your meds – so long as you pick a time and then roughly aim for this. If you combination contains efavirenz, then it is better to take this at night. If your meds conatin dolutegravir, then the morning is definitely better :)

    Hi Ross,

Meds need to be taken at a time that works best for you, so yes, this will be OK.

    Hi Nneoma,

Some HIV meds are better if you take them before you go to bed. Other HIV meds (ARVs) can be taken during the day.

What ARVs are you taking? And do you have access to your viral load and CD4 count results? Please let us know.

    Hi Sibahle,

ARVs need to be taken whole, they can’t be grinded up. If your sister is sick, then is there any possibility of taking her to a hospital?
