Q and A

Question

My boyfriend wants unprotected sex, what are the chances of him getting infected?

I am HIV positive and my boyfriend is HIV negative. He wants to have unprotected sex and I am refusing. What are the chances of him being infected by the virus? He said he won’t ejaculate.

Answer

Hi,

There is  a risk of HIV transmission from having sex without a condom. This is the case whether your boyfriend ejaculates or not. Not ejaculating in you will not protect him from transmission. You are being a responsible partner.

If you are on HIV treatment the risk of transmission is much lower. If your viral load is ‘undetectable’ the risk of transmission is extremely low – close to zero. However HIV treatment will not protect you from other STI’s. If you are a woman and not using other contraception it will also not prevent you getting pregnant.

There is no risk of HIV transmission when you use a condom.
