Q and A

Question

Could Eviplera be making my lips darker?

I have taking Eviplera for almost 3 years, I tolerate the tablet well, take it at the same time everyday with my lunch.

I have noticed that my lips are darker than usual. Is this one of the side effects which Is not heard off?

Answer

Hi

Thanks for your question – and sorry that it took a little longer to reply this time.

Darker lips is not been reported as a side effect with the drugs in Eviplera. The only things that is close is that emtricitabine (FTC) was linked to some pigment changes in African people – only a small percentage in the first studies and now very rarely.

If you and your doctor thik something is changing and can’t think of another option, you could use lamivudine (3TC) instead of emtricitabine (FTC).

The drugs are so similar otherwise that it is easy to switch. This will involved taking three pills separately though, but is one option.

Perhaps also take good photogrpahs now in a setting that you can repeat later – to see if this is getting worse. Is there any chance this could be realted to more sun exposure?
