Q and A

Question

Can I breastfeed if I have run out of formula food?

Answer

Hi

This is a question that you really need to contact your clinic about.

They will have full details of your medical history and can give the best advice.

If your viral load is undetectable, then the risk to the baby so low that breastfeeding is now recommended for many mothers.

In the past it was important not to switch between formula and breast feeding. This is still the case I think, but if you have no other option you baby will need to be fed.

If you are not on treatment, or your viral load is detectable, or you have not been taking your meds, then breastfeeding will be a higher risk of transmitting HIV.

Please talk to the clinic though.
