Q and A

Question

I am losing weight, is this normal?

Hi,

I have been using Atripla for just over a year but just recently I have noticed that I’m losing weight. I am 5ft3, 29 yrs old, and am currently down to 9 stone. I have not been 9 stone for years. I am normally 10 stone. Is this sudden weight loss normal?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

I am afraid it is difficult for me to determine what is causing your weight loss as there is not enough information to go on.

Weight loss can be caused by many different things, some of which could be HIV related. Have you experienced a loss of appetite? Have you been stressed recently? Are you recovering from a recent infection?

If you have been taking Atripla for just over a year and have had no other side-effects then it is unlikely your weight loss is being caused by your HIV treatment.

As with any change in your health it is important to consult your doctor to see if there are any underlying conditions which could account for this sudden weight loss.
