Question
Concerned about HIV positive friend?
7 April 2010. Related: All topics, Travel.
I am concerned about a very close friend who is HIV positive. His viral load is undetectable and his CD4 count over 500 but he wishes to travel to the US. I do not seem to be able to find travel insurance (he is over 70 and intends to stay more than 31 days) Since the removal of the US ban on HIV positive travellers has anyone experienced travel to the US (is it now hassle free) Also, because of the time difference medication which at present is taken around 10/11 pm before sleeping will be taken mid-afternoon 2/3 pm (not the time recommended)
Answer
Thank you for your questions.
Travel to US for HIV positive travelers should be hassle free, especially if the person never traveled on a special waiver to the US during the time of the travel ban. As far as travel insurance is concern, try www.hivtravelinsurance.com
Lastly, it is best that your friend sticks to the times that he takes his drugs on in the UK while on his travels in the US to avoid any confusion. Sure he will have more or less drugs in his body for one day back and forth to and from the US, but it is far better than upsetting his whole treatment schedule.
