Question
Even with a non-reactive test, could I be HIV positive?
7 May 2010. Related: All topics, HIV transmission.
Hi,
I had unprotected sex and 7 months later I went for a HIV test. The results were non-reactive or negative for HIV-1 and HIV-2. Is there any possibility I have HIV?
Answer
Thank you for your question.
Modern HIV tests are accurate 2-3 weeks after HIV infection. If you tested 7 months after a possible exposure then the negative result you received would be accurate. If you were HIV positive it would have definitely shown up on the test after 7 months.
