Q and A

Question

What if I think I took a double dose of my HIV meds?

What happened if you have taken the drugs twice per day due to forgotten that you have already taken the drug?

Answer

Hi

Please don’t worry – most people do this at sometime.

A double-dose of any current drugs will all be fine. The most obvious exception will be more side effects from efavirenz. If this drug is part of your combination you might have more mood changes – but only for a day or so.

Then just go back to your normal dose again the next day.

The easiest way to stop this happening is to use a weekly pill box. These are cheap and the  days are marked on the flap lids. Fill this every week and it will easily show if you have taken or missed a dose.

As someone who has been on meds for over 20 years, this really works.

Hi Benjamin, HIV pills can be taken lifelong. They do not reduce their life expectancy.

Due to how well they work, when taking HIV treatment you can expect to have a similar life expectancy to someone HIV negative.

Hi Anil, please go to the emergency department immediately. No medication should be taken this much and should be addressed immediately by medical professionals.
