Q and A

Question

How can I protect my two-year old son from infection if I am HIV positive and we are living in the same household?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

It is not possible to infect someone by living in the same house as them. The most common ways of getting HIV are:

  • Unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected person
  • Using the same needle as someone who is infected to, for example, inject drugs, get a tattoo, get a piercing
  • From a positive mother to her baby during pregnancy, labour, birth or breast-feeding.
