Q and A

Question

Can I take HIV and CMV meds during Ramadan fasting?

I am a HIV positive patient and taking Antiretroviral Therapy since last 45 days. I am also affected by CMV retinitis and started taking valganciclovir tablets since last week. Is it safe for me to do Ramadan fasting.

Answer

Hi there

Thanks.

Even though fasting generally includes not eating or drinking during the fast period, there are exceptions depending on how important the medicines are.

Based on your information, you should be taking your meds. Actually, it is very important that you do not miss your meds.

CMV treatment is only usually used if the CD4 count is already very low. These medicines are really important right now. Not taking them could make you very ill or could permanently damage your eyesight.

Some sources also comment that medicines do not contain any calories, so you are not breaking a fast.

It is also okay to move the times you tkae you meds to fit in with the fasting times. But if valganciclovir needs to be taken during the day, please do not miss these doses.

Your doctor should give you the same advice.

Hi Zahid, what is the name of the ARVs you are taking? Most new combinations can be taken with or without food.

Fasting will not have any impact on how well your treatment works. It will still be effective over the course of Ramadan.
