Question

Can I take an antacids before PrEP?

Hi,

I have been taking PrEP for 10 days but I have read on that I should have not taken ant-acid with PrEP.

I am not worried as I have taken anti acid 2-3 hours before PrEP as I had side effects of indigestion.

Will this affect my protection level as I had unprotected sex with someone of whom I don’t know HIV status.

Thanks in advance

Regards
Ajay

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

No. This will not reduce how effective PrEP is.

According to the Liverpool Drug Interaction website (and the product information leaflet, there are no interactions between PrEP and ant-acids.

Some other HIV meds can interact with ant-acids and this usually involves separating the two different meds by a few hours.

The main interactions are listed here:

I thought this interaction issue with antacids (or things like Pepcid or Nexium) was just an issue with DoxyPEP and not PrEP.

    Or am I mistaken?
