Q and A

Question

How long should I wait for a hepatitis booster vaccination?

Hello,

I am due to get my last shot of hepatitis vaccine next month on 27th July to complete the three doses. My question is, how long should I wait until I re-take it again? 10yrs or 20yrs?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

I am guessing the vaccination you mention is for hepatitis B? Hepatitis A usually has one injection then a booster one year later which lasts for 10 years.

Hepatitis B vaccination is usually given as a course of three injections within a period of about 6 months. In the UK, shortly after the last injection, a blood test is given to measure the amount of antibodies produced. This will then tell you how long you need to wait for your booster. It is usually between 3-5 years but varies depending on your individual immune system response.

When you go for your final vaccination on 27 July you should ask the doctor when to go for your booster.

Routine monitoring for HIV-positive people should include an annual check on the levels of immunity to hepatitis A and B so that when you need boosting this is done in plenty of time.
