Q and A

Question

Why are my lymph nodes swelling?

Hi

I have been HIV positive for 9 years and on medication for the last 4 years. A week ago I developed lymph node swelling which after a week or so it cleared without any intervention.

However, three days ago on my right armpit I felt pain and swelling about 2cm in circumference accompanied with slight headache and feverish. What could be the cause of this? Should I be worried?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

Lymph nodes usually swell when there is an infection and go down again once the infection has passed. The swelling is an indication that your immune system is fighting an infection.

The headache and fever could be associated with an underlying infection and the swollen lymph nodes a sign that your body is fighting it off.

You shouldn’t be worried but as with any symptoms, consult your doctor.

    Hi James,

As it says above, your lymph nodes swell when there is an infection. You shouldn’t be scared but you should go to see your doctor to get them checked. Taking two doses of meds happens sometimes by mistake and it’s usually okay. But you are right to let the doctors know about this too.

I am hiv positive and on my meds. My lymph nodes in my groin are swollen. I think I might have took two doses of my meds by mistake. I messaged my doctors but no reply yet. I’m getting very scared because I barely slept last night cuz it hurt so bad.
