Question

Will 6 weeks breast feeding put my baby at risk?

hello please l need help. l breastfed my baby for 6 weeks then switched to formula.  She had negative pcr results at birth, is it possible that I infected her in those 6 weeks of breastfeeding.

Answer

Hi there

Congratulations on your new baby.

Please do not worry about these first 6 weeks.

If your viral load was undetectable over this time then you baby is still liekly to be HIV negative. The PCR results are also really good.

It is also really good that you switched to formula milk after 6 weeks.

If your clinic recommended early breast feeding this woul have been the best for your baby’s health.
