Question
Can I switch between breastmilk and formula for my bab?
29 January 2026. Related: All topics, Children, Pregnancy.
Hi I am HIV positive and it’s been 8 years on ARVs.
So I was mixing breast milk and formula and it’s been 3 weeks now so um I’m scared about my baby so what can I do now?
Answer
Hi there
Congratulations on your new baby – and also for doing so well on ARVs for so long.
Being undetectable is really good news and the ARVs will also have protected your baby.
It is okay if you need to sometimes use breastmilk and sometimes formula for these early weeks. However, different countries recommend different ways to feed for the first six months, so please can you talk to your clinic to see what they advise.
This might be to try to pick either breast or formula for most of the time. Then is you sometimes need to switch every now and then, this is also likely to be okay.
Best wishes as this must be a really special time.
