Question

Can the p24 test pick up all types, groups and subtypes of HIV

If there are subtypes of HIV – and I have read on the internet some are so rare that they are not found here in the UK, would a standard HIV test in this country be able to pick up infections with HIV-1 and HIV-2 and their subgroups? Would the p24 test be accurate for all these subgroups after 28 days?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

Please follow this link for information about the different types, groups and subtypes of HIV.

The HIV tests are designed to pick up every types, group and subtype of HIV, even the ones not commonly found in the UK. The p24 test can do this at 28 days after exposure for 95% people.
