Q and A

Question

Can I take antibiotics with my ARVs?

I am not currently needing meds for myself but am on Kaletra and Combivir as I am pregnant, I have been to the out of hours doctor today and I have been diagnosed with a kidney infection, he has prescribed Cephalexin. I didnt want to discuss my other treatment with him and I cannot get hold of my HIV doc to double check its ok to take the antibiotics with the other drugs, please could you advise.

Answer

Thank you for your question.

You should be fine to take cephalexin with your current HIV meds. There are no reported interactions. However, if you experience any symptoms after you have started taking these drugs you should contact your HIV doctor as soon as possible.

Congratulations on the pregnancy!

Hi Gold, thanks, it is fine to take both meds at the same time.

Hi I’m HIV+ and I take TLD everyday, co-trimoxazole was recently introduced to my treatment, I take co-trimoxazole 2 hours after taking ARV, do I need to stick to the time or can I take it at the same time with my ARV or anytime I like a day?

Hi Mj, as catoxymag-n contains aluminium and magnesium it is required to split the times of these doses. This is similar for the pylori containing a PPI which can interfere with stomach acid and reduce how well TLD is absorbed.

To avoid any interaction it is advised to use this pylori kit either 2 hours before PEP or 6 hours after.

Can pylori kit drugs including catoxymag-n suspension be taken together with the TLD pep pills at an interval of 1hour 30mins?

    Hi Sinkala

The treatment for peptic ulcers usually includes two or three anti-protozoal drugs.

These include lansoprazole, tinidazole and clarithromycin which are included in Pylokit.

These drugs are fine to take with nearly all HIV drugs, unless your combination includes boosted atazanavir (which is not widely used anymore).

Please double check with your doctor or pharmacist if ypou are not sure.

Can someone taking ARVs take anti-protozoal treatments like Pylokit for stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection?
