Question

How likely is lipo to occur?

Hi,

With the newer combinations available, how likely is lipodistrophy and lipoatrophy to occur? This is one of the worst side effects that worries me. I know I would find it too hard to accept it over the benefits of the drugs.

Answer

The good news is that more is known about lipodystrophy and your doctor will be montiroing you more carefully to pick up any problems. Fat loss (lipoatrophy) is mainly caused by the drugs d4T and AZT, neither of which are now recommended in first combinations.

Although fat accumulation is not well understood, closer monitoring can help to change treatment or make other lifestyle changes (diet and exercise) if you get these symptoms.

This is a common worry before starting treatment, but todays combinations affect far fewer people than earlier combinations.
