Can I catch HIV through kissing or giving oral sex if I have gum disease?

Answer
Yes.
If the HIV-positive partner has a high viral load and semen, vaginal fluid, pre-ejaculation fluid or blood get in contact with the area of the gum disease there is a risk of transmission.
Even though oral sex is generally called a low risk activity, it is estimated to account for 5% of infections.
There have been no documented cases of HIV infection from kissing.
