Question
My husband is HIV negative. Can we have a baby?
6 June 2012. Related: All topics, Pregnancy, Sero different couples.
I’m HIV positive and I’ve been taking ARVs for almost ten years. My husband is negative but we want to have a child.
Is it possible? I’m 43yrs old.
Please help.
Answer
It should possible for you and your husband to have a child. Many sero-different couples like you (where one partner is HIV positive and the other one is not), have had and continue to have healthy HIV negative babies.
There are a number of conception options available for couples like you. For more detailed information on these options, please follow this link to our guide to HIV pregnancy and women’s health.
You mention that you are 43 years old. Many women in their 40s have gone on to have children. However, chances of becoming pregnant as we approach our mid 40s become less as opposed to a woman in her 30s or younger. This is because as we get closer to the menopause, the number of eggs we produce declines.
Good luck with your future plans.
