Q and A

Question

I'm HIV negative and my fiance is positive. Can we have a baby?

My fiance just found out that he is HIV positive we have yet to have sex. He does not have any children is there a way we could have children without me and the child getting infected?

Answer

It’s good that you are supporting your fiance. Its good too that you are looking to the future and planning to have children. Many sero-different couples (where one is positive and the other is not), have had healthy HIV negative babies.

It is possible for you to have a baby without your fiance passing HIV on to you or the baby. However, this depends on a number of factors including whether he is taking ARVs and whether he has an undetectable viral load. ARVs are antiretroviral treatments for HIV. Viral load refers to the amount of virus in his body. Undetectable viral load means there is very little virus. Therefore the risk of him passing HIV onto you are dramatically reduced.

Please follow this link to our guide to HIV pregnancy and women’s health. It provides more information about conception options for sero-different couples. It also outlines in more detail, conditions that need to be present,  for couples like you.

Good luck with your future plans.
