Q and A

Question

Will augmentin help with my pneumonia?

I am on meds, with a CD4 of mid 400s and CD4% of 31% and undetectable viral load. I have just been diagnosed with pneumonia after apparently having it unchecked in my lungs for over 3 weeks now. I have been prescribed an outpatient 7 day course of augmentin. Will I recover from this or has this permamently damaged my immune system? Also, is this a sign of more things to come and more illness?

Answer

The fact that you have been prescribed Augmentin suggests that you have bacterial pneumonia, caused by streptococcus pneumonia bacteria. Augmentin, penicillin or erythromycin are the commonly used treatments.

Also the fact that the doctor has prescribed a treatment at home suggests that it is a mild form of pneumonia. During and several days after the treatment, however, you may feel a bit tired as your body continues to recover. Still, you should let your GP/HIV docotr
