Q and A

Question

Does Alprazolam interact with my ARVs?

Hi,my neurologist suggests Alprazolam 0.25mg to treat neuropathic pain, on long duration.

Are there any problamatic interactions between my ARVs ( ATV/R plus Truvada) and Alprazolam.

Answer

Hello,

Thank-you for your email.

It is possible to take your ARVs together with Alprazolam, although there may be a need to change the dose of Alprazolam. This is because there is a potential interaction between atazanavir/ritonavir and Alprazolam which can alter the concentrations of the drug that are absorbed by your body.

Please speak to your doctor about this, and make sure that this interaction is taken into consideration. You can read more about this interaction at hiv-druginteractions.org

    Hi John,
Yes, there is a potential interaction. Please see here. You might be getting the wrong dose of the ARVs or the alprazolam. Is there another sedative, or a different drug, that is suitable for you? Can you ask at the clinic about this?

It is achievable to take your ARVs well-organized with Alprazolam, although there may be a need to change the dose of Alprazolam. This is because there is a potential interaction between atazanavir/ritonavir and Alprazolam which can alter the absorption of the drug that are captivated by your body.

Hi Jake, please talk to your HIV doctor and pharmacist about this. The concern for the interaction is that the levels of alprazolam might be reduced. This might mean you need to increase the alprazolam dose if your symptoms become worse (for example if the alprazolam is becoming less effective). You are not at risk of your HIV meds not working. You doctor needs to give you advise on this, but it might just be to be aware that alprazolam might need a higher dose.

hi lisa, what does the data (efav and alprazolam) you showed me mean? what if the medications are taken at least 3 hours apart and alprazolam taken in lower dose like about half the pill? i only take the alprazolam occasionally when needed – only around once or twice a month. Will i get immune with my ARVs? thanks.

    Hi Jake,

There’s a possibility that there could be an interaction between the alprazolam and the efavirenz as the following discussed:
