Q and A

Question

Will deliberately infecting somebody stop them leaving me?

hi

I know a girl who found out about her status and told her partner, but then he broke her heart. Now guys are coming to seek her hand in marriage. Presently she is on ARV drugs for 5 months.

The questions I have are:
1. should she infect the new guys so that her new partner will not run away, and
2. should she inform him about her status

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email.

Deliberately infecting somebody else with HIV is illegal in most countries, and could lead to your friend being arrested and put in jail. It is also very possible that a man who was deliberately infected would leave not want to stay with someone who cared so little about his health.

Telling people about having HIV can be very difficult and unfortunately some people will not be able to deal with this an may reject you because of it. I am very sorry to hear of the heartbreak caused by your friend’s ex-boyfriend. But not everybody will respond this way. Please see the THT ‘telling people’ page for advice about this.

Please let me know if you have any questions after reading this.

    Hi Sandra,
    1. I am sorry you are so lonely. A good way to meet HIV positive men can be through HIV support groups or online dating like poz personals . If you tell me which country you live in I might be able to suggest a local organisation.

    2. Usually your virus will be undetectable after 3 months on treatment, but for some people this can take up to 6 months. This is dependent on taking the medication every day as prescribed. Please follow this link for more info about viral loads on treatment.
