Q and A

Question

Will treatment be effective?

I am 49 years old and have diagnosed with HIV last week. My CD4 is 200 and 8%. My viral load is 75k. I started my treatment this week. How much my medication will be effective with this figures? And how likely my CD4 goes higher than 600 ?

Answer

Hi,

I’m sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. How are you coping since finding out you are HIV+?

With a CD4 count of 200 it is good that you have started treatment. This should stop your CD4 count from dropping futher, and will make it much less likely that you will get any opportunistic infections.

HIV treatment is very effective and there is no reason to think it wouldn’t work in your case. Your viral load should be undetectable (less than 50) within 3-6 months so long as treatment is working properly.

CD4 count responses vary a lot between individuals though so it’s not possible to predict how your CD4 count will respond to treatment. You can see a graph of average CD4 count increases here.

Good luck with treatment- please get in touch if you have any further questions or want any more information!
